Ed Tech Day in Ithaca

Several of us attended Ed Tech Day in Ithaca, NY. I'd like to share 1 really cool thing I learned about. Maybe others of you already knew about this, but I didn't. It's called, "Producer" and it combines a movie and a PowerPoint. Although the download title says that it's for PowerPoint 2003, the guy from Microsoft said it works with PowerPoint XP also. It allows you to have video playing in one, small window and then sychronize PowerPoint slides to it in a larger window to add more information. It's a free download at this link.
Producer for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
Here's how Microsoft describes it:

Use Microsoft Producer 2003 for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 to capture and synchronize audio, video, slides, and images, then preview and publish a rich media presentation virtually anywhere for viewing in a Web browser.

If you would like to see what it can look like, CLICK HERE to see a demo, or click on the picture above.

They gave a demo at the session I was in and it is incredibly easy to use. I'm thinking of using it to create some online tutorials for things.

Lori - Producer is fantastic! Karen has really been exploring it as a streaming tool. It is a fantastic way to make PPT more interactive. I have also seen people put a picture or diagram in the photo spot instead of running a constant video stream.
MS used to have MovieMaker free in XP and now in 03 you have to buy MovieMaker but Producer is free!
MS has tons of tutorials: http://www.microsoft.com/office/powerpoint/producer/prodinfo/tutorials.mspx
Here is another resource:

Producer is great with kids - but too I see it playing a role in "just-in-time" training support for teachers!

Donna - I'm confused by your comment about needing to pay for MovieMaker in 03. MovieMaker is not part of Office, but part of the Windows XP operating system, service pack 2. It is a free download also, if you didn't install service pack 2. There is also a version for Windows Millenium, but unfortunately not a version for Windows 2000. I asked Microsoft about it and they said there was nothing available for Windows 2000. As far as I know, there isn't any version you can purchase.

Here's a link to the MovieMaker 2.1 page on the Microsoft website. Maybe I'm missing something?

Hi Lori! You're right - I meant the 2003 Windows platform. It was free on the XP platform. But for the 2003 platform Producer is free. The techs said that to have MovieMaker you have to purchase it as an add on to the 2003 server, where it was free on the XP server.
I guess some staff want the MovieMaker back and to get it back the tech team has to re-load the XP operating system onto the computers because it won't work with the 2003 server we have now and we just updated everyone's system to the 2003 system.
I only know a little because I have been at eetings where they were discussing having to put computers back to the XP platform.

Producer is great and it is really easy to use. Karen is at a library conference in Washington DC, but I will see if I can get any more information on Producer to post when she gets back!

Sorry for the mix-up! Donna : )

That makes a little more sense, I guess. I hadn't realized there was a Win 2003 platform. I thought Vista was the next upgrade after XP and it isn't out yet. Boy, I hope they keep MovieMaker in Vista. With Apple competing with iMovie I can't imagine Microsoft giving up MovieMaker.

Interesting.
